Scoutmaster Minute 1

Hello Parents of Troop 50!

In an effort improve our lines of communication and keep you informed of important events and details of Troop 50, I will be sending out periodic letters to you. Your sons will continue to receive their information via meetings, call around and e-mail. The circle time at the end of each meeting remains a critical time for scouts and parents to attend for all info, and these mailings will help to highlight our activities.

Call Around: Each scout should be receiving a call on Sunday night from their patrol leader, informing them of the upcoming week’s events. If they have not heard by Sunday evening, they should call their patrol leader to get this info.

E-Mail: Scouts should check e-mail and updates on the web site which is www.bsa50.com. We often have photos from our events too, so the please check it out!

Mail Box Board: Copies of upcoming campouts, events, agendas and permission slips are located in the mail box board slots in the basement of the church. The church is almost always open at the kitchen door entrance at the north side of the building (door to the left of the basement door entrance) and you walk though Founder’s Hall and through the double doors, turn left down the hall and you’ll see the basement door on your left.

Adult Leaders: Every adult must receive BSA essentials and youth protection training to act as a chaperone on future campouts. We will be offering a couple of training classes to assist you in this matter. You must do this to qualify to receive BSA insurance coverage as well.

Campouts/Events: It is imperative for us to have an accurate count of how many scouts and adults will be attending each campout and event. If a person’s plans change, it is their responsibility to call our Outdoor Chairman ASAP so that she may make the appropriate adjustments to reservations, drivers, and other important details. When we go on trips such as the High Ropes or Rock Climbing, the Troop has to deposit money in advance to guarantee our reservation. If a scout make a reservation and then cancels beyond the deadline, the scout family will be responsible for any costs incurred by the troop.

You should have received a copy of the Sweet 16 of BSA Safety. Perhaps after reading through this, you’ll have a better understanding of the BSA philosophy on how adults should be working with youths.

You also should have received a copy of the current Troop roster by patrols and the adult roster. Please review your listing and if there are any corrections or additions, please contact Janet Stern.

For a quick look at what is coming up see the Events page on this website.

Stay tuned for details on upcoming events such as broomball, Eagle Cave campout, Camp Crown and Rock Climbing!

Please keep in mind the annual Spaghetti Dinner in April. It is not only a wonderful dinner, but a critical fund raiser for our Troop. Each scout has the opportunity to put 50% of each ticket sold toward their own “personal” Troop account to help defray expenses for Troop related campouts and activities.

Finally, the Father-Son Winter Campout at Camp Crown was a great success with 7 adults and 9 scouts attending. The temperatures were cold and in the single digits at night…cold weather sleeping bags may be a hit on the holiday wish list!!!

Thanks for your cooperation and support of your boys!!! Together, we can make our experience at Troop 50 something the boys will remember for a lifetime.
